I carve granite memorials in Kelowna. Every one is cut for a single person, shaped around who they were. I finish it before I start the next.
Fifteen years of countertops by day, then memorial clocks, benches and engraved stone at night — for friends, for neighbours, for families who heard my name from someone else. Eventually I sold the countertop company and went all in here.
What the funeral trade hands a family is a short list of the same few things, none of them made with much care. That gap is what I went after.
Some families want one piece for the garden. Some want a dozen small ones, so everybody who loved them carries something home. You tell me about them — the fishing, the boots, the dog they never went anywhere without — and I work from that.
I am not trying to give anybody closure. I have never thought grief works that way. What I make is something that keeps them present — on the mantel, in the garden, somewhere you walk past every day.
I cut every one myself. Nothing gets ordered in from a catalogue. Whether you are planning years ahead or you lost someone this week, start by telling me about them.
